social media increased or decreased quality of news and information ?

I believe that social media has both increased and decreased quality of news and information that comes out now than it did before anyone could just post information.  I believe that social media has made it easier people to put for information and news to be more readily accessible to people everywhere. So that we will get all different points of views. I do not think that it has increased or decreased the quality of it, it all depends where you are looking your news and information. For the big new networks like CNN,BBC,CTV,and CP24  social media has helped increased the quality. These networks they allow you to send picture and video to them and then they will put it on the news as soon as they get it. Before the help from social media, people would have to wait until the day after it happen to find out what happen, sometimes you would not have any pictures to go along with the story. Can now receive up to the minute news on you cell phones, TVs and on your tablet. But on the other hand social media decreased quality of news and information that is put out. Anybody can type something and say it is real. Lately I have seen posted on sites that said stars were dead but it was only a hoax this is an example of how the quality of news and information had declined in the past years. People can post random information online and one of the tops sites that you should be careful of is Wikipedia. Readers have to be sure the information is from a credible source. I believe that social media has it positives and its negatives to it just depends where you are looking for it

  3. I completely agree, every day when I wake up i check the news, my emails and webct because it’s easier then turning the tv on and listen to news. However, we have to always make sure of what we hear or read.

  4. I agree with some of what you've said and disagree with other parts.
I agree that it's great that we can have news reported to us the minute it happens via our phones, tablets or computers. The fact that news programs have Twitter accounts is hugely advantageous to society.

However you mention news programs have field reporters. When you say that we can now have news broken to us right away with pictures and the whole nine yards, I'd have to argue that this is not due to social media. Reporters are always on the scene almost right away, and are constantly reporting breaking news with one, two or multiple reporters on scene.
For example look at CP24 with occupy Toronto. I specifically remember them reporting on that event. The main organizers of this protest were having a meeting and as soon as the first person emerged from the tent he walked over to the CP24 reporter who was standing outside of the tent and made his statement on behalf of the protest.

I don't really think social media helps news get reported quicker. I think that's only true in the sense that we can get these events sent to our phone, and don't need to be infront of a TV to see them.

  8. good points... but i believe social media has increase the quality of news... nes doesnt have to be negative or possitive but now its made more accisible trough social media. Weather its your favourite artist coming to the city or news on a player getting traded, its news and its what most of us look for without watching tv at home.
